Beside the Seaside is a short film co written by actress Sandra Almendros and Harry Neve. Harry shot and edited the film but his main focus was upon sound, both the initial recording and the subsequent post production sound design. The film has little dialogue and no music revealing the potential of sound as a means to evoke emotion and create tension. Music is often used far too much in film and television as a means to make the viewer feel a particular emotion. It is almost cheating as we have been conditioned, for example “Jaws”, the semi tone interval, gradually speeding up instantly creates tension and that same semi tone interval has been used time and time again for exactly that same purpose. It works every time. Upon hearing it one instantly feels tense and you know something is about to happen. In Beside the Seaside only sound is used as a means to evoke emotion and create atmosphere.
